EEVALOTTA MATIKAINEN GRAVITY
MODERN NORDIC JAZZ WOVEN WITH STORIES, SPACE, AND BREATHTAKING INTERACTION.Gravity was born out of years of composing and performing – slowly, almost unnoticed. As the double bass became more central to my musical thinking, the compositions began to shift. More space, silence, and breath emerged. The melodies expanded, and the music found its own path.
In the sound of the ensemble, which performed its debut concert in September 2026, the double bass, saxophone, guitar, grand piano, drums, and wordless vocals form a landscape where sensitivity and power walk hand in hand. In their performances, deep serenity and spaciousness meet virtuosity, playful energy, and thrilling, unpredictable moments. The music thrives on intense interaction, acute listening, and the courage to live in the moment. Each instrumental piece is tied together by meaningful stories and deep reflections on life, which I share with the audience between the songs, bringing the listeners closer to the heart of the music.
For me, Gravity is not just a new band. It is a new phase as a composer and musician – a home for music that has long waited for the right moment to be born.Welcome to the journey.

FI: Gravity syntyi vuosien säveltämisen ja esiintymisen myötä – hiljalleen, lähes huomaamatta. Kun kontrabasso tuli yhä vahvemmin osaksi omaa musiikillista ajatteluani, myös sävellykset alkoivat muuttua. Niihin ilmestyi enemmän tilaa, hiljaisuutta ja hengitystä. Melodioista tuli avarampia, ja musiikki alkoi kulkea omia polkujaan.
Syyskuussa 2026 debyyttikonserttinsa soittaneen yhtyeen soinnissa kontrabasso, saksofoni, kitara, flyygeli, rummut ja sanaton laulu muodostavat maiseman, jossa herkkyys ja vahvuus kulkevat rinnakkain. Esityksissä syvä rauha ja ilmavuus kohtaavat virtuoosisuuden, leikittelevän energian sekä vauhdikkaat, yllättävät tilanteet. Musiikki rakentuu intensiiviselle yhteissoitolle, herkälle kuuntelemiselle ja rohkealle hetkessä elämiselle. Jokaista instrumentaalia kappaletta sitovat yhteen merkitykselliset tarinat ja syvät elämänteemat, joita jaan yleisön kanssa kappaleiden välissä – kuroen umpeen etäisyyttä ja tuoden kuulijan lähemmäs musiikin sydäntä.
Minulle Gravity ei ole vain uusi yhtye. Se on uusi vaihe säveltäjänä ja muusikkona – koti musiikille, joka on pitkään odottanut oikeaa hetkeä syntyä.

Gravity föddes ur år av komponerande och framträdanden – långsamt, nästan obemärkt. I takt med att kontrabassen tog en allt starkare roll i mitt musikaliska tänkande, började även kompositionerna förändras. Det uppstod mer rum, tystnad och andning. Melodierna blev öppnare och musiken började vandra sina egna vägar. I ensemblen, som gjorde sin debutkonsert i september 2026, bildar kontrabas, saxofon, gitarr, flygel, trummor och ordlös sång ett landskap där känslighet och styrka går hand i hand. I framträdandena möts djuproterad frid och luftighet med virtuositet, lekfull energi och fartfyllda, överraskande vändningar. Musiken bygger på intensivt samspel, lyhört lyssnande och modet att leva i stunden. För mig är Gravity inte bara ett nytt band. Det är en ny fas som kompositör och musiker – ett hem för musik som länge väntat på rätt ögonblick att födas. Välkommen med på resan.

Double Bass & Compositions
The double bass is my creative home and anchor, but in this ensemble, I also step boldly into a melodic, storytelling role. Through my compositions, I create a framework of space, breath, and tranquility—a landscape inspired by deep reflections on life, where we can play and explore together. On stage, I love to bridge the gap between the music and the audience by sharing the meaningful stories behind these instrumental pieces. While I provide a powerful rhythmic spine, my deepest passion is to be an active listener and a sensitive conversationalist in this shared musical dialogue.
JOONATAN RAUTIO
Saxophone
Joonatan Rautio is one of Finland’s most luminous and respected jazz saxophonists, known for combining supreme technical mastery with a deep swing and powerful emotional charge. In Gravity, Joonatan is responsible for the thrilling and unpredictable moments on stage. Through his horn, he weaves spectacular jazz lines and virtuosic fireworks, breathing life into the most intense and dynamic sections of Eevalotta’s compositions.

MIKAEL SVARVAR
Piano & Wordless Vocals
Mikael Svarvar is a soulful and powerful singer and pianist, widely known for his boundaries-crossing work across the Finnish music scene—spanning everything from leading energetic gospel choirs to performing as a soloist with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra. In Gravity, Mikael is in his absolute element. He weaves rich harmonic textures on the piano while using his captivating, wordless vocals as a soaring instrument. His masterful ability to improvise freely and play with rhythms adds a profound emotional depth and beautiful warmth to the ensemble’s storytelling.
MARTIN SÖDERBACKA
Guitar
Martin Söderbacka is an inventive, versatile guitarist and Eevalotta’s long-time musical collaborator. His playing beautifully bridges traditional jazz guitar styles with a modern world of effects. In Gravity, Martin crafts dynamic, painterly soundscapes that span from delicate, ballad-like atmospheres to virtuosic, soaring improvisation. His unique sonic identity and keen sense of harmony provide the music with a beautiful, resonant foundation and profound depth.
MIKA KALLIO
Drums
Mika Kallio is one of the most sought-after and distinctive drummers on the Finnish jazz scene, widely recognized for his exceptional sense of sound and style. Mika’s playing is a form of deeply lyrical, nuanced, and painterly storytelling that reacts both sensitively and boldly to every musical impulse that arises on stage.
